Security expert here: I think this is a hoax. He can't use your Mac without your password and even if you have the screensaver password off, he definitely can't delete your account without it. He could only use a Guest account (IF you had that enabled).
And if he formatted OSX that would require a separate (firmware) password.
So unless you had BOTH no password (or had it disabled, which OSX won't let you do easily) AND did not follow Hidden's instructions to create a Firmeware password, this is not possible.
Glad you got your laptop back. Any pics of the police arresting him? That would be so awesome!
